Chapter Six

Ten days had passed since the accident. Neither he nor Davin had gone back to work. Phil was able to manage the crutches a little better, but he wouldn’t be going for long strolls on the beach any time soon.

They were sitting on the couch, Davin tucked in under his arm, his head resting against Phil’s shoulder as they waited for the news conference. There’d been a breakthrough, and he wanted to hear what the airline had to say about the crash. It was bad enough that they’d had to get legal council. Now they were just waiting to see what the final answer was and how to proceed. It would be a long time before the courts came to a conclusion. People had died, and so far it didn’t seem like they knew what had caused the plane to go down.

“Hey, do you want some tea?” Davin asked from the kitchen.

“I’d rather have beer.”

“Sorry, no drinking until you’ve been released by the doctor.”

“That sucks. Come sit with me. I need to hold you before this comes on.”

Davin stepped into the den with two cups of tea and a sleeve of biscuits. He placed the tea on the table and then handed over the sweet treats to Phil. “I thought you needed something good.”

“Thanks. I’m a little nervous. I don’t know why though. Maybe it’s because I met that one guy, Rory, the copilot’s boyfriend. I feel sorry for them. You know it’s been tough.”

“If he caused this, it should be tough.”

“Yeah, but still, it’s sad. I mean how crappy is it that you make one mistake on your job and people die?”

“Kind of sucks, but it sucks more that people died.”

The image on the screen changed and Davin reached for the remote, turning up the volume. Someone was talking midsentence, and both he and Davin quieted as they focused on the people speaking.

“…Again, there is now evidence that supports the theory that pilot error was not a factor in the crash of HA1710.”

The news reporter droned on, their voice lost to the noise in his head. After a few more minutes, Phil grabbed the remote and turned the volume down.

“Damn, that’s… I don’t know,” Davin said.

“Yeah. I guess the pilot probably feels better. Still, so many people died.” Phil picked up another biscuit and bit into it, chewing thoughtfully. “You know, I still would like to take you to Chicago.”

Davin stilled and stopped breathing. “I don’t know.”

“Not yet, but when I can walk better. You know, like in a few weeks after I go back to the doctor.”

Davin picked at Phil’s pants, pinching the fabric and catching a bit of his skin in the process. “I don’t know.”

“It would be great if my mom could come over here, but she can’t travel,” Phil said.

“I know. It’s just getting onto a plane again is frightening.”

He nodded and bit his lip. Maybe now was the time to really talk, but Davin looked distracted, his face more pale than normal. They’d been through so much with the crash.
